At United Air Duct Cleaning and Restoration Services, we install UV-C germicidal lights inside Katy HVAC systems to stop mold and bacteria from growing where they grow best — on a damp evaporator coil. One visit, and the light works around the clock from then on.

Why UV Lights Earn Their Keep in Katy

Killing What the Coil Grows

Your AC runs eight or nine months a year here, and the evaporator coil stays wet nearly that whole time. In Katy humidity, that wet metal becomes a garden — biofilm, mold, bacteria, all of it sitting directly in your airstream. A UV-C lamp mounted at the coil sterilizes that surface continuously, so the growth never gets started.

Cleaner Air Between Duct Cleanings

Duct cleaning removes what has already built up. The UV light keeps the coil from re-seeding the system afterward, which is why the two pair so well. Households with allergy sufferers usually notice the difference first as the musty smell at AC startup fades, then in fewer flare-ups during the long cooling season.

Protecting the Equipment You Already Paid For

Biofilm acts like a blanket on the coil. The system runs longer to hit the same temperature, your bill creeps up, and parts wear faster. A coil kept clean by UV transfers heat the way it was designed to — which means shorter run times and more years out of the unit.

What UV Light Installation Involves

We inspect your air handler, pick the mounting spot that bathes the coil in direct UV-C light, wire the lamp safely into the system, and test output before we leave. Most installs take about an hour. The bulb needs swapping once a year — we can handle that during any regular service visit.

UV Light Installation Questions, Answered

Do UV lights in HVAC systems actually work?+

For what they're designed to do, yes. A UV-C lamp aimed at the evaporator coil keeps mold and bacteria from colonizing the wet surfaces inside your air handler. It isn't a whole-house air purifier and we won't sell it as one — it's targeted protection for the one spot in your system where growth causes the most trouble.

Where does the light get installed?+

The two common spots are at the evaporator coil or in the return plenum. For Katy homes we almost always recommend the coil position, because our humidity keeps that coil wet most of the year and that's where growth starts. We'll show you the placement before anything gets mounted.

How long does the installation take?+

Plan on about an hour. Most of that is getting clean access to the air handler and wiring the lamp properly — the mounting itself is quick. There's no duct demolition and no mess, and your system is back on before we pack up.

Will I actually notice a difference?+

The first thing most customers report is the musty smell at AC startup disappearing within a couple of weeks. Allergy-sensitive households tend to notice fewer symptoms over the cooling season. Results are strongest when the install follows a duct cleaning, so the light is protecting a system that starts clean.

How often does the bulb need replacing?+

Once a year. UV-C output fades long before the visible glow does, so a bulb that still looks lit can be doing almost nothing. We track install dates and can swap the bulb during any regular service call — it takes a few minutes.

Is the light safe for my family and the equipment?+

Yes. The lamp is sealed inside the air handler, so nobody in the house is ever exposed to UV. During installation we position it to avoid shining directly on plastic components and wiring insulation, which is the one thing careless installs get wrong.

Ready to Put a UV Light in Your System?

Call (281) 318-5155 and we’ll take a look at your air handler, usually the same week. If your ducts haven’t been cleaned in a few years, ask about pairing the install with an air duct cleaning — starting from a clean system is where the UV light does its best work.
