A recent job: fresh blown-in insulation laid in around the ductwork and air handler.

Why Attic Insulation Matters So Much in Katy

On a July afternoon a Katy attic can run well past 130 degrees. That heat pushes down through the ceiling all day, and your AC spends the afternoon fighting it. When the insulation up there is thin, matted down, or was never brought up to current levels, the upstairs never quite cools off and the electric bill shows it.

A lot of homes built in the ’80s, ’90s and early 2000s still have the original insulation. Over 20 or 30 years it settles, gets crushed by storage and foot traffic, and leaves bare spots near the eaves and around the attic hatch. Topping it up is one of the simplest ways to make the house easier to cool.

Signs Your Attic Needs More Insulation

  • Upstairs rooms stay warm even with the AC running
  • You can see the tops of the ceiling joists poking through the insulation
  • The insulation looks flat, patchy or gray instead of fluffy
  • Summer electric bills keep creeping up
  • The AC runs almost nonstop on hot afternoons

If you can see the joists, you’re almost certainly below what Energy Star recommends for our climate, which is roughly R-30 to R-60 in the attic.

How We Do It

We start with a look at what’s up there now: depth, condition, and anything that should be dealt with first, like a crushed duct or a disconnected vent. Then we blow in new loose-fill insulation to an even depth across the whole attic, working around the ductwork, the air handler and any recessed lights. We keep the soffit vents clear so the attic can still breathe.

When we’re done you get photos of the finished attic, and we leave the house the way we found it.

Pair It With a Duct Cleaning

We’re already in the attic, so a lot of customers have us do both on the same visit. New insulation keeps the heat out, and clean ducts mean the air you’re paying to cool isn’t carrying dust back into every room. See how our air duct cleaning works, or read about duct board cleaning if your system uses fiberglass duct board. A UV light at the coil is another easy add-on while we’re up there.
