UV Light + Full Duct Cleaning: A Houston-Area Job Worth Walking Through

When we pulled the access panel on this system in the Copperfield area of northwest Houston, the homeowner already suspected something was off. The air never quite smelled fresh, a couple of rooms felt stuffier than the rest, and there was a faint musty note when the AC first kicked on in the morning. What we found inside explained all three.

This was a full residential duct cleaning paired with a UV air purifier install — and it’s a good example of how the two work together.

What the System Looked Like Going In

The plenum and the evaporator coil had years of accumulated grime on them. The coil is the part of your system where warm air passes over cold refrigerant lines to get cooled — and because it’s constantly damp during the cooling season, it’s the single most common place for microbial growth to take hold in a Houston home. When the supply collars and plenum walls are coated the way this one was, every cycle of the AC is pushing air across that surface and out into the living space.

The supply duct collars showed the same story — buildup right at the connection points where air enters each run. None of this is unusual for a system that’s gone several years without service in this climate. Houston humidity does the heavy lifting; the dust just gives it something to cling to.

The Cleaning

We cleaned the system end to end — plenum, coil surface, supply collars, and the duct runs themselves using brush agitation and negative-air extraction. We also installed new flexible duct where the existing runs were too far gone to clean effectively, and sealed the connections with mastic rather than tape, which holds up far better in attic heat over time.

The after shots tell the story better than we can. The plenum floor that was coated going in came out clean, and airflow through the supply runs was noticeably stronger on the way out.

Why We Added a UV Air Purifier

Cleaning removes what’s there now. A UV light helps keep it from coming back. We installed a PureUV PURE-M unit positioned to shine on the coil and the moving air — the wavelength it produces disrupts mold, mildew, and bacteria at the DNA level so they can’t reproduce and recolonize the coil between cleanings.

In a dry climate this would be optional. In Houston, where the coil stays damp for most of the year and the attic stays hot, it’s one of the more practical add-ons we install. It runs quietly, uses very little power, and it directly targets the spot where microbial growth actually starts.

Is This Worth Doing on Your System?

A few signs point toward yes. If your home has that persistent musty smell when the AC starts, if certain rooms feel stuffier than others, if anyone in the house has allergy or respiratory symptoms that get worse indoors, or if it’s simply been more than three or four years since the ducts were serviced — it’s worth getting eyes inside the system.

We’ll show you what we find before we quote anything. No system gets work it doesn’t need.
